What Do You Want?

What Do You Want?

In the profound comedy Bruce Almighty, TV news anchor Bruce Nolan (played by Jim Carrey) rages at God (Morgan Freeman) about unanswered prayers.

So when God hands divine power over to him, Nolan decides every request will get a “Yes!” from heaven — only to have chaos ensue.

He whines to God, “Why are they so unhappy? I gave them what they wanted!”

To which God replies, “Since when do people know what they want?”

I would have to say most people I meet don’t, but it was crucial for me to answer that question if I wanted to rediscover and reignite my passion.

This is where shadow work can help.

I couldn’t see what I’d been missing until another person showed me. One day, a conversation with my coach wandered to the topic of airplanes.

“You know, Allen,” he said, “when you talk about flying, your whole face changes. Your eyes brighten up — even your skin tone changes. I think you should explore flying again.”

I’d been hooked on flying from the time I first got my pilot’s license in the Georgia Tech flying club. But over the years, the demands of business, marriage and children had pushed the joy of flying right out of my life.

Soon after this revelation, I reactivated my pilot’s license and started my training. On my first fully recertified solo flight, I let out a scream for joy so loud I think they heard me 5,000 feet below!

Reconnecting to my passion for flying opened me up to new possibilities. I also have a passion for designing and developing inspiring real estate projects, and for helping and serving others in their life journey.

If you, too, have lost touch with what you’re genuinely passionate about, take time to ask yourself:

  1. What do I want?
  2. What do I want?
  3. What do I want?

Tapping into our unique passion can drive us to new heights. Closely related to this is finding our purpose. Next, we’ll look at how passion becomes direction.
